Gateway School

When I started school in Central Oregon I went to a 2 room school in Gateway. The school later was made into a home. It was still a part of the 509J school district. The door on the right of these photos was for first through fourth grade. The door on the left was fourth through eighth grade. There was a accordion style large door between the two rooms where it could be opened up into a large room for special occasions. There was two of us first graders, one second grader and four third graders. I do not remember how many fourth graders or on up from there.

One of the third grade students had a beautiful Collie who used to follow him to school and all of us kids adored that dog.  One day during recess a rabbit ran onto the school yard and the Collie took off after it. The dog was concentrating on catching the rabbit instead of where it was going, the rabbit turned real quick and the dog ran into the monkey bars head first and killed itself. School was useless that day as all of us kids were so upset. So many years ago and I still can picture it in my head.

When we started busing to the big school we were so far ahead that the first two years we slacked off and did nothing and it really ruined our study habits for many years as we were so used to skating by.
