California Quail

The California Quail is an interesting bird. They spend most of the time on the ground but the male will get on something high to be on the watch for danger or to roost at night.  They mate with only one female and have from  to 16 chicks which both will take care of. The chicks stay on the ground for about 10 days. Quail usually don't fly unless they have to, the would rather run on the ground and hide in the brush where they like to live. They live in coveys of 10 to 200 birds. The little quail are quite small and it is a real treat to see a quail with her little ones running in a line behind her.  They hide in the tall grass and brush and have startled many a hiker when they flush some airborne as it makes quite a racket when they take off.  They like the high desert of Oregon and California. In Arizona they have a different type of quail and it is more brown but the behaviors are the same.
