Metolius River

Camp Sherman is a little community just west of Sisters, Oregon. It is noted for the Head of the Metolius River and the fly fishing along the Metolius. It is a very small community with a resident deputy, a small fire dept, several campgrounds and a small store.

The scenery around Camp Sherman is beautiful.

When you get out of town on some of the dirt roads the views of the Cascade Mountain Range is amazing. Take a drive and see Mt. Washington. What a view without even getting out of your car.

You can almost always count on seeing deer if you go out in the early morning. The blend in so well that sometimes they are hard to see but they are out there. So is bear, elk, cougars, turkey and quail or many other animals.

Most of the time they are not that afraid and will stand there while you take photos of them. They know when deer season is and all of a sudden you won't see a deer one.

Even the woods around Camp Sherman have character, many shapes, sizes and colors.

More mountain scenes when driving around Camp Sherman.

Three fingered Jack.

This is the Metolius River, it comes right out of the side of a mountain but I did not hike down to the head of the Metolius even if it is a nice fun walk as I had my 90 year old mom with me.   The two springs that feed the head of the Metolius at the base of Black Butte put out about 50,000 gallons a minute. The river is only approximately 30 miles long but the temperature and flow of the river remain almost always consistent. Makes for a good home for fish and camping.  If you have some time one day drive up to Camp Sherman and it is marked to find the Head of the Melolius and take a hike down to see it.  You can drive down most of the river.  It eventually flows into the Deschutes River at Lake Billy Chinook which is better known as "The Cove".

The river is very swift and cold and can be very dangerous.  Several people have lost their lives in the river.

A picturesque quieter section of the river.  There are lots of camp grounds all up and down the river.

Even the quieter sections of the river can be quite swift and and remember all of it is cold consistantly even in summer.

Some areas are so shaded from trees and hills that they are almost dark but the difference in colors in the river is pretty. The sound of this river is so peaceful. I could just take my lawn chair and spend the day watching and listening to it and the birds.

Do you notice how many people you are seeing in the photos. A very relaxing place to get away from everything and just relax in God's country.

Look one lone fisherman in miles of the river. Can you just imagine the peace and quiet that he is experiencing while he enjoys his fishing.

An old water wheel. Not sure what it was used for, it was placed between one of the small islands and the shore near "The House on the Metolius". Someday I am going to ask one of the old timers what they used it for.

The House on the Metolius is a 200 acre private retreat that has been in existence for over 100 years. If you are interested in having your wedding there, a meeting or just a get a way for you and your hubby here is a web site to check it out.  http://www.metolius.com/

Check out Camp Sherman and the Metolius area on Google.  Sisters is a tourist town that is not very far away. You can go be a tourist during the day and in the evenings come home to the peace and quiet which is Camp Sherman.  Suttle Lake is just down the road too with a restaurant and a nice lake.  If you really want the city life at night or during the day it is a short approximately 40 mile drive to Bend (the biggest city east of the Cascades) which offers anything you could want plus a very scenic drive included.

I hope you visit the Camp Sherman area some weekend by tent, camper, motorhome or stay in one of the cabins. It is a weekend you won't forget.
